Once Bitten, Twice Shy (Wolf Smitten Series Book 2)

*** Received complimentary copy in exchange for honest review***

I started in on Phoenix Johnson’s Once Bitten, Twice Shy immediately after finishing the first book in the series, The Wolf in the Neighborhood. The latter was a decidedly quick read, but moved along with a fast pace with an intensity that belies the typical tropes of the genre.

Once Bitten, Twice Shy provoked expressions of astonishment. It spawned excitement and the need for me to have someone to discuss it with. I loved the way everything played out, and how the strength of Krissy was expounded on in this installment of the Wolf Smitten Series.

The tranquility of Krissy’s and Derek’s lover’s nest comes to an abrupt demise when yet another person tries to break them up. Derek receives a phone call from his ex-girlfriend, Aubree. She has come all the way from London to get Derek back, and will stop at nothing to accomplish this task. Derek’s secrets are revealed, as is the way Aubree broke Derek’s heart. Krissy will defend her new found relationship with Derek, even if it means having to fight Aubree for him.

Krissy and Derek have to trust one another implicitly, and work together to ensure this drama does not break their bond. The reader is drawn into the plot, wondering how the new developments will affect his wolf side, and how everything will change Krissy’s life. If there’s one thing that remains a constant, though, it’s the deliciously hot scenes between Derek and Krissy. Their emotional and physical attractions blend together in an undeniable, palpable intimacy that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. I do, however, want to suggest that Derek and Krissy seek some therapy for their choice in former partners. They have definitely been involved with some crazy people!

Johnson’s narrative style complements the fast-paced journey of love and self-discovery that Krissy and Derek are taken on. Once Bitten, Twice Shy proves to be more than a paranormal romance – it’s about self-preservation, being true to oneself, and fighting for what your heart wants.

Normally, I find cliff hanger endings to be obnoxious, but Johnson does it with perfect finesse that has me wanting more. In light of that, I hope to see another installment for this series. When it comes out in paperback, I will proudly make a slot for it on my bookshelf.
