Q - Do I need an agent to submit?

A - No.  You are free to make the choice that is right for you.  We will always welcome authors who represent themselves and/or those represented by an agent.

Q - May I send several submissions to NNP at the same time?

A -  NNP limits the submissions to two (2), at any given time, from each author simply to avoid confusion between the works being edited.  Once your final draft is complete and accepted on one of your two available submissions, you are free to submit another to take its place.

Q - Do you consider young adult books?

A - No.  NNP is a strictly 18+ content publisher and so is our website.  We will not consider anything other then adult content.

Q - Does the book need to be print ready?

A - This is kind of a double answer question really.

We do expect all submissions to be free from spelling and grammatical errors, contain proper tense throughout the story, maintain appropriate use of punctuation and basically be as ready for publication as you can make it.

However, do we expect your book be ready to be sold when you send it?

No. Rarely is this the case and our editors will ensure that kind of editing is done to produce the greatest chance for selling success. Obviously there may be some editing necessary as we do not expect perfection but if you can all check/double check your work this would greatly reduce our required time and therefore aid in how long it takes to release your work. Any changes that need to be made would be diverted to you for approval and completion.

Q -  Does the erotica/romance need to be about humans?

A -  With a few exceptions, Yes.  No bestiality except in the obvious specific case of paranormal works.  No children or persons under 18 years of age in sexual acts within the story and no incest content.  We are not interested in father/daughter or the like.  We do not publish works that cross our idea of an invisible line of moral vulgarity in any way.

Q -  Can my story contain rape or other violent acts of a sexual nature?

A - No.  For example, we allow non-consent/reluctance under certain “role  play” or other similar circumstances as contained in the BDSM genre, but it should not be meant to cause non- consensual harm to another character in the story. Writing about rape or child abuse in the past of a character is one thing, but we do not want to read about the nasty details nor have it as part of the stimulation in the work.

Although we always like to encourage unrestricted, free and creative writing and we encourage those stories that “push the naughty limits”, there are simply some lines we will not cross and some things we just cannot produce.

If there is a chance your submission may be under a category not mentioned but you think we might allow it, you must let us know whether the piece contains any questionable content in your initial submission email.  This also allows us to direct it to the correct editor for some of the more “hard core” material.

We do put disclaimers about content if it could potentially disturb our consumers, so please let us know in advance.

Q - My manuscript is unfinished/unpolished. May I send it anyway?

A - If you are a previously published author of NNP, you can feel free to mention anything that you are working on to your editor. But, no, we can’t accept unfinished, unpolished work from anyone.

Q - Do you accept work that is being read or considered by other publishers?

A - No.  We do not accept simultaneous submissions.  Our staff are quite busy and to consider a manuscript takes time, time wasted if the manuscript has already been accepted by another house. We are among many publishers in agreement regarding submissions. Please respect us enough to send your submission to one house at a time. It is simply a consideration to all publishers involved as well as your fellow authors who may be waiting for our time to consider their submission too.

Q - If NNP accepts my manuscript, can it be published as a print book, as well as an ebook?

A - NNP has recently begun providing print books to some of our authors.  Certain criteria and sales levels must be met before a book is considered for print.

Q - Do I have to send a synopsis with a short story?

A - Yes.  We need to have a synopsis with every piece of work submitted.  In the case of a short story a 1/2 page is acceptable but for novelettes, novellas, novels and mega novels and we do need it to be a min of one page, detailing the outline/plot of the book, to a maximum of 2 pages. The Specific guidelines are available on our "How To Submit to NNP" page.

Q - I don't have a synopsis. May I send an excerpt instead?

A - No. We need to know if your story has the elements we are looking for before we venture into your entire manuscript.  A synopsis gives us that information.  You will simply have to create one.

Q - Do I need to send a new Bio with every work submitted?

A - If you are a NNP currently contracted author and there are no changes or additions you need to make to your Bio, then we will simply use the one we have on file already for your future works.  We do ask that our authors update their Bio on a yearly basis to keep accomplishments and additional information current.

Q - What exactly do you mean when you ask me what my advertising/marketing plan is?

A - What we mean is we would like to know where you will be advertising for it.  If you have a blog/facebook profile/fan page/twitter account/goodreads profile or a website you intend to make to tell people about your book and let them know they can buy it from us.  We would like to know what kind of advertising you are planning on doing to help in the sales of your book.  Simple links and a quick indication of the intention is all we are asking for. We use your information to determine how we can help you to market your book as well.

Q - My book fits into a few of the different genres and sub genres.  How do I know which one to specify for it on the submission letter?

A - We know this can happen frequently and ask that you try to chose the genre/sub-genre that more closely describes the plot of the book.  Many books will be erotic but the characters are paranormal and yet it is more formed into a romance story with a “happily ever after” (HEA) ending so we suggest it should be submitted to the paranormal romance genre and not just plain erotic paranormal.  If we feel it fits better into the erotic paranormal genre, after reading your submission, then we can always make a quick change.

Q - Once I have submitted my manuscript how long will I have to wait for a response?

A representative from Naughty Nights Press will send you an email within 8-12 weeks from when we received your submission, either confirming acceptance of your work with directions on how you are to proceed, or you will receive a rejection letter in the same manner.  For Anthologies, a response date will be indicated on the submissions call and it is not likely that you will hear from us before this date.  Calling or emailing us will not make this process any faster.

Q - I previously submitted my manuscript to Naughty Nights Press and it was rejected. May I resubmit it?

A - If we were interested in your work, but sent you a rejection email, we may also have included in that email an explanation for our rejection and what changes we felt needed to be made to the manuscript. If you were able to make these changes, then yes, we welcome you to resubmit it.

We will make every attempt to tell you what the circumstances of the rejection were, as we firmly believe writers cannot learn if they do not know why their work was rejected.   Sometimes it is just a matter of too many changes necessary or we felt the book was not properly proofed before submission or even that we simply have too many other submissions of the same nature already on the waiting table.

Q - What may I expect for the terms of the NNP contract?

A - NNP holds exclusive publishing rights on each individual contracted acceptance for a minimum of 36 months from date of publication. NNP pays 40% royalties on net revenue to the author for ebooks.  Story submissions for anthologies are set out as one time payments on each individual submission call, paid upon the first publication.

We provide 10% and 12% of the net revenue of paperback and hardback books respectively.

We prefer to request all future works by you be submitted to us for first option of acceptance as long as you are under current contract with us. (This may vary on individual contracts depending on prior contracted commitments to other publishers)

The author retains full copyright to work during the 36-month period.

Q - How soon after I submit my final, fully edited draft will my book be released?

A - Release dates are dependent upon a number of factors. Availability of editors, cover art requirements, the extent of manuscript editing required, and the publishing schedule for other books in the same genre or by the same author. NNP does make every effort to release accepted work within six to twelve months, or sooner, if at all possible.

Q - Do you promote/market my books?

A - Partly. Our Authors and the NNP Marketing Department will work together on promotion.

While some publishers generally leave promoting/marketing works entirely up to the author, NNP will do attempt to do a little bit extra to assist our authors.  We have a number of blogs/websites/review sites where your books will receive several different forms of marketing and promotion.  From advance copy reviews to release day advertisements, we are here to help it sell.

We will assist in directing you to the best places we feel you could use to market your book.  This information has been compiled from other authors and their success with marketing.  We do need and expect to see a marketing plan from each of our authors.  Authors do need to contribute to the marketing of their work.

“That which is seen or spoken of in more places is more likely to be remembered.”

NNP is fortunate to have several incredible sponsors who also advertise for our publications all over the Internet on their websites and blogs. We would like to be able to do it all, but we are only a nice, small press company, able to offer the comforts of a family but without the finances of the bigger conglomerations.  However, we will do our best!

As part of the NNP family, our authors are a name, not a number.

We at NNP are constantly striving to assist authors with any questions they may have about publishing their work.  If you have a question that doesn't appear here on our Questions & Answers page but you feel it would be beneficial to other prospective writers, please let us know.  We are more then happy to answer any questions that you may have and if several others have expressed the same concern or question then we will add it to our Question & Answers page..
